The show’s development brought premier filmmakers to forge a television series that ponders the questions: “How does an empire fall into chaos? How are heroes and villains born? What are the limits to human compassion?” With multiple alien factions, the allegory of this show cautions against blind ambition and witnesses the struggles between cultural diplomacy and authoritative power.

Near Future.
American Refugee is born from the desire to discuss the damage caused when good people become divided. This story challenges the construct of family—what role you serve, who holds the reins, and the rifts that form during life-and-death situations. The characters of this story, with all their comforts of abundance stripped away, serve as our own surrogates. And as they grapple with the people they are becoming, it gives rise to conflict in the viewer—to interrogate and push them to examine themselves.

With this genre-blending series, we took a grounded approach to Sci-Fi, imbued it with a nostalgic Coming-of-Age tale, and peppered it with conventions of a Neo-Western. Re-developed as The Warden, this series retains the DNA that garnered its prestige, forming it into a gritty procedural.
